Afghanistan sees sharpest-ever child malnutrition surge

The World Food Program warned that Afghanistan is experiencing its highest-ever spike in child malnutrition and urgently needs $539 million to aid its most vulnerable families. Almost 10 million people—about a quarter of the population—face acute food insecurity, with one in three children stunted. The surge follows a steep drop in emergency food assistance over two years, including a U.S. aid cutoff in April. Mass returns of deportees from neighboring countries and climate-driven droughts, water shortages, and flash floods are compounding the crisis.
