Cartel’s attempted to use online accounts to spread misinformation about the extent of unrest in Mexico.
Following the killing of cartel leader El Mencho, false stories and fabricated images of extreme violence rapidly circulated on social media. Researchers say cartels intentionally amplified misinformation to exaggerate chaos and challenge the government’s control. Although real unrest occurred, including roadblocks and arson, online depictions were far more severe than reality. Mexican authorities are investigating accounts linked to organized crime and working to counter the spread of false reports.
