Australia and Papua New Guinea have signed a new defense treaty.
Australia and Papua New Guinea signed a landmark mutual defense treaty that deepens military cooperation and includes a commitment to respond jointly to armed attacks. This is Australia’s only alliance-level pact outside of the ANZUS Treaty and Papua New Guinea’s first such agreement, marking a significant shift in regional security dynamics. While China expressed concern that the treaty could unfairly target third parties, both nations emphasized it is not intended to create enemies but to strengthen partnerships.
