Belgian court rules against state in a landmark case addressing its colonial past

A Belgian court has ruled that the country committed crimes against humanity with its colonial policies.

A Belgian appeals court has ruled that the country’s separation of mixed race children from their parents in oversees colonies was a crime against humanity. The case had previously been dismissed by a lower court based on a finding that the policy was not outside the norm for its era. In 2019, the Belgian government apologized for its taking children from African mothers.
