No one has claimed responsibility for the killings, but such attacks are common in Nigeria’s northern region.

Assailants stormed Benue’s Yelewata community late on Friday night, opening fire on villagers who were asleep and setting their homes on fire; many of those killed were fleeing violence in other parts of the state. While the initial death toll was reported to be 100 on Saturday, 20 bodies were recovered on Monday.
