Ecuador is facing intense unrest as bus drivers and farmers protest President Daniel Noboa’s decision to eliminate diesel subsidies, leading to roadblocks, clashes, and one protester’s death. The government deployed 5,000 troops to the capital to prevent further violence, while over 100 people have been arrested amid accusations of excessive force. The protests, led by the powerful Indigenous confederation, have centered in northern regions and reflect deep dissatisfaction with Noboa’s economic policies, including tax hikes and public sector cuts.
