El Salvador’s Congress clears hurdle to speed constitutional reforms

El Salvador’s Congress has approved changes that make it easier to amend the Consitution.

El Salvador’s Congress has approved a Constitutional amendment which makes it easier to amend the Constitution. Critics say the change will allow the current ruling party to further consolidate power. Propoents say that this is an important change to ensure that necessary reforms can be made. The Congress also recently voted to extend a state of emergency which suspends several basic rights include the right to a lawyer.
