ICC makes the first conviction over past atrocities in Sudan’s Darfur

Militia leader convicted of murders, assaults, and mass executions.

Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman received 27 guilty verdicts for leading Janjaweed forces that killed, assaulted, and destroyed villages in Darfur during 2003-2004. Judges found he personally killed two prisoners with an ax and ordered scores of summary executions. The conviction came as a new conflict between Sudan’s military and the Rapid Support Forces, descendants of the Janjaweed, has killed at least 40,000 people and displaced 12 million since 2023.
