ICC makes the first conviction over past atrocities in Sudan’s Darfur

The ICC has convicted an individual in connection with crimes committed in Darfur.

The International Criminal Court convicted Ali Muhammad Ali Abd–Al-Rahman, also known as Ali Kushayb, for leading Janjaweed militia forces in a brutal campaign of atrocities in Darfur between 2003 and 2004. This marks the ICC’s first conviction related to the Darfur conflict, with the court finding him guilty of 27 counts including mass executions, rapes, and personally killing prisoners. The conviction was hailed as a major victory for justice and a warning to perpetrators of atrocities that accountability will prevail.
