ICC prosecutors seek life sentence for Janjaweed leader convicted of Darfur crimes

ICC seeks life sentence for Darfur militia leader.

Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court asked judges to impose a life sentence on Ali Muhammad Ali Abd–Al-Rahman, known as Ali Kushayb, for leading Janjaweed forces in atrocities during the Darfur conflict. He was convicted last month on 27 counts, including mass killings and rapes, marking the court’s first conviction tied to Darfur. Abd–Al-Rahman denied the charges but had identified himself by name and nickname when surrendering in 2020. His sentencing comes as Sudan faces renewed violence, with tens of thousands killed and millions displaced in the latest conflict between the army and paramilitary forces.
