The IMF has stated it is prepared to support Venezuela but requires its major shareholders to recognize the country’s leadership and for Venezuelan authorities to formally request assistance. Despite limited communication with Nicolás Maduro’s government since 2019, the Fund has continued monitoring the Venezuelan economy closely. Kristalina Georgieva expressed concern over the exodus of roughly eight million Venezuelans, which has severely contracted the economy. She also warned that inflation is rising and the IMF fears a resurgence of hyperinflation.
