It is suspected that over 100 chemical weapons sites are still in Syria after the regime of Bashar al-Assad, the country’s former president, came to an end. The sites are assumed to have been a part of researching, manufacturing, and storing chemical weapons. Al-Assad had used chemical weapons against rebel fighters and civilians during the country’s civil war lasting over a decade. Syria’s new government is led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which the U.S. designates as a terrorist group although it has renounced its links to Al Qaeda. The new government must now address these weapons sites, as the possibility of military groups gaining access to them is a major risk.
