Libya’s coast guard shoots at a vessel seeking to rescue migrants in distress, group says

Libyan coast guard fires on humanitarian rescue ship

Libya’s coast guard shot at a European rescue vessel for 15-20 minutes while it searched for migrants in distress, threatening to “kill you all” if the ship didn’t leave international waters. The Ocean Viking sustained significant damage but no casualties after rescuing 87 people from two migrant boats, including many from Sudan. The attacking patrol boat was a 2023 gift from Italy to Libya as part of EU border management support. SOS Mediterranee called for a full investigation into what it described as part of Libya’s “long history of reckless behavior” that violates international maritime law.
