Mali political activist freed after monthlong abduction

The Mali authorities have released a leading political activist after a month in captivity.

Alassane Abba, the former secretary-general of the Codem party, was seized on May 9 after speaking out about the country’s civic rights and the ruling junta’s failure to hold an election since its coup in 2021. His arrest came amid pro-democracy demonstrations in Mali’s capital. Several political figures remain detained for criticizing the transitional government’s policies.
