Mexico appears to abandon its ‘hugs, not bullets’ strategy as bloodshed plagues the country

Mexican authorities appear to be taking a harder stance against the country’s powerful cartels.

In recent weeks, Mexican authorities have begun to take a harder stance against the powerful cartels. While no official statements have been made to signify the shift, police and military operations have been increasing. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has also carefully avoided directly stating if she will continue the “hugs, not bullets” policy of previous President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The shift also comes amid increased pressure from the United States to reduce the number of migrant passing through the country.
