A state of emergency is called in Peru as police are patrolling the streets.
On Wednesday, the first day of the state of emergency, residents of Peru’s capital saw increased police and military presence. This is following the election of President José Jerí, who is attempting to reduce crime. This state of emergency waives several constitutional rights, including assembly and protest. The state of emergency was called directly after a large protest that turned violent, calling for the President’s resignation.
