Nauru gives Australia a veto right over a range of pacts with other nations including China

Australia and Nauru signed an agreement which allows Australia to veto agreements between Nauru and other countries.

Australia and Nauru have signed a new agreement which will see Australia massively increase its financial support to Nauru. In exchange, Nauru has given Australia the ability to veto agreements Nauru may make with other countries in the areas of security, banking and telecommunications. The agreement is similar to one signed by Australia and Tuvalu in 2022. The agreement is part Australia’s attempts to limit China’s influence in the South Pacific.
