Nepal’s new prime minister urges calm after deadly protests

New leader promises compensation and national unity

Nepal’s first woman prime minister, Sushila Karki, took office Sunday following deadly protests that killed at least 72 people and destroyed key government buildings. The massive “Gen Z” demonstrations began over a social media ban but escalated into broader anger about corruption and inequality, forcing former Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli to resign and flee. Protesters attacked parliament, the prime minister’s palace, and businesses while police opened fire, prompting army intervention to restore order. Karki promised each victim’s family would receive 1 million rupees in compensation and pledged to rebuild the country ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for March.
