Pakistan and Afghanistan border closure extends into second day after deadly clashes

Border crossings remain shut as hundreds of travelers wait stranded.

Fighting erupted Saturday when Afghan forces attacked Pakistani military posts, with Afghanistan claiming 58 Pakistani soldiers killed and Pakistan reporting 23 deaths while saying it killed over 200 Taliban fighters in return fire. A ceasefire now holds along the 2,611-kilometer Durand Line border, but all crossings stayed closed Monday for the second day, trapping hundreds, including Afghan refugees fleeing Pakistan’s illegal residency crackdown. Authorities briefly allowed 1,500 Afghans stranded at Chaman to cross on foot while the key Torkham crossing remained completely shut.
