Pakistan’s parliament has passed a bill to grant the government more power over social media.

Pakistan’s ruling party has passed a bill through the lower house of the parliament to give the government more power over social media. The opposition party boycotted the session in protest of the bill. Advocacy groups has expressed concerns that the bill will limit freedom of speech because it includes criminal penalties for spreading disinformation. The government has said the bill will only be used to combat incorrect information and hate speech.
