Peru wakes up to 7th president in less than a decade after President Boluarte ousted by Congress

Peru has sworn in a new President.

Peru swore in its seventh president in under ten years as 38-year-old José Jerí took office following the overnight impeachment of President Dina Boluarte. Jerí, a lawyer with limited political experience, pledged to pursue national reconciliation, address rampant crime, and ensure fair elections ahead of the April presidential vote. His rise was unexpected, especially after previously stating he wouldn’t replace Boluarte if she were removed. Congress ousted Boluarte in a near-unanimous vote after she failed to appear for a late-night impeachment hearing, citing her administration’s failure to curb escalating violence.
