Prison riot in Mexico’s Veracruz state leaves 7 dead, 11 injured as authorities restore order

Overcrowded prison uprising against Grupo Sombra turns deadly

Seven inmates were killed and 11 were injured in an overnight riot at Tuxpan prison, Veracruz, where firefighters extinguished inmate-set fires. Authorities said injured prisoners are now receiving medical attention after restoring order. Videos captured smoke billowing from the facility and inmates with severe burns. Inmates claimed the unrest began as a revolt against Grupo Sombra’s extortion, noting the prison held 778 inmates despite a 735-inmate capacity.
