Remnants of Assad’s chemical weapons program recovered, Syrian official says

Syria’s transitional leadership says it has uncovered remnants of Bashar al‑Assad’s secret chemical weapons program, including raw materials and munitions resembling those used in past sarin attacks. Authorities have detained 18 suspects—some former major generals and individuals already under Western sanctions—accused of involvement in the program. OPCW teams working with Syrian officials located more than 70 rockets and aerial bombs, as well as chemicals and equipment tied to sarin production, at multiple previously undeclared sites. Syrian officials say securing these materials marks the first time such munitions were recovered before potential use, framing it as a step toward eliminating the country’s remaining weapons‑of‑mass‑destruction risks.
