South Sudan’s deputy president says firing of officials threatens a peace deal with the president

South Sudan’s cabinet reshuffle threatens a long standing peace deal.

The firing of several senior government officials including cabinet ministers has threatened a long standing peace deal. The firing have reignited tensions between various factions in the government and society that had until 2018 been engaged in a civil war. The 2018 peace deal has yet to be fully implemented due to disagreement on government policy. The presidential elections has been continuously postponed, but is currently scheduled to be held in 2026.
