UK and Norway track Russian subs near critical undersea cables.
Britain says it worked with Norway for more than a month to monitor a Russian attack submarine and two spy subs operating north of the U.K., preventing them from approaching underwater cables and pipelines. Defense Secretary John Healey said the vessels eventually left the area and that no infrastructure was damaged. Officials linked the activity to Russia’s deep‑sea research directorate, which NATO countries suspect of mapping or preparing to sabotage Western systems. Healey warned Moscow against targeting undersea assets, saying Russia remains the primary threat even as global attention shifts to the Middle East.
