Veteran Ugandan leader eyes new term in election amid succession talk

Uganda’s President intends to seek a seventh term.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, aged 81, is poised to seek a seventh term, claiming continued leadership will protect the gains of long‑standing peace and stability. His main challenger is former pop star Bobi Wine, who energized younger voters unhappy with unemployment and corruption. The election, however, has been overshadowed by campaign violence, including teargas, live ammunition, and at least one killing, raising concerns about political unrest.
