Madagascar’s military has installed a new ruler following the ousting of the country’s president.
Colonel Michael Randrianirina has taken control of Madagascar after President Andry Rajoelina fled amid Gen Z-led protests over poor governance and infrastructure. Randrianirina, a member of the elite CAPSAT military unit, suspended key institutions and announced a two-year military-led transition before elections. Previously jailed for inciting mutiny, he returned to prominence by urging soldiers to defy orders to suppress protests. His background includes roles as governor and battalion commander, and he is seen as a patriotic figure with a strong stance against colonial influence.
