The world’s newest country, South Sudan, is on the verge of being thrown into a civil war. A standoff between President Salva Kiir and his deputy, Riek Machar, has grown more tense after Kiir’s troops detained Machar last week. There is fear that a fresh round of ethnic killing will break out, bringing a repeat of the country’s last civil war which killed around 400,000 people. Machar’s party is saying that his detainment halts the peace deal that had ended the 2013 to 2018 conflict.
