The United Kingdom, alongside the European Union, have announced a package of sanctions against Russia. The move is an attempt by the EU and UK to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a ceasefire deal with Ukraine. The sanctions target Russia’s shadow fleet of oil tankers which transport oil by circumventing Western restrictions. The UK’s package will also target Russian weapons systems’ supply chains, Russian information operations, and financial institutions which Russia uses to evade sanctions. The European Commission is already working on another package of sanctions to follow.
