France’s Socialists threaten to oust government amid fraught budget talks

France’s left wing parties have threatened to oust the government.

France’s Socialist Party has threatened to file a no-confidence motion by Monday if the government fails to include a wealth tax targeting billionaires in the 2026 budget. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu, leading a fragile minority government, had previously won Socialist support by suspending a controversial pension reform. However, the Socialists argue the current budget unfairly burdens retirees and working-class citizens while sparing the ultra-rich. With support from both the far left and far right, the Socialists could potentially topple the government, deepening France’s ongoing political instability.
