Protesters clash with police in Ecuador amid nationwide strike over fuel prices

Demonstrators blocked roads and battled police in the capital city.

Protesters clashed with police in Quito as demonstrations against fuel price increases spread to Ecuador’s capital, with officers firing tear gas to disperse crowds chanting against President Daniel Noboa. One civilian has been killed and dozens injured since the protests began, with over a hundred arrested. Noboa imposed a state of emergency in 10 provinces and argues the $1.1 billion subsidy cut is necessary to stabilize government finances.
