Senegal’s finances have been in crisis since the 2024 discovery of billions of dollars in debt, hidden by a government no longer in charge of the West African country. Following is a timeline of how Senegal’s debt woes unfolded and efforts to address them:

March 2024 – Opposition candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a former ‌tax inspector popular with young voters, wins the presidential election.
September 2024 – Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko accuses former President Macky Sall’s government of lying to partners and falsifying figures.

October 2024 – Moody’s downgrades Senegal’s long-term ratings to B1 from Ba3. An IMF mission begins assessing the impact of revised fiscal data on past and current lending programmes and suspends Senegal’s $1.8 billion credit facility.
