Australia passes tougher laws on guns, hate crimes after Bondi shooting

Australia has passed additional gun control laws after shooting in December.

Following the December Bondi Beach shooting that killed 15 people, Australia’s lower house passed laws enabling a national gun buyback and stronger background checks. Lawmakers also advanced separate legislation increasing penalties for hate crimes. The bills passed despite opposition from conservative parties, and now move to the Senate. Officials say the reforms aim to address both the motivations and the means behind extremist violence.
