Garment factory workers in Bangladesh continued intense demonstrations for a fourth consecutive day, maintaining pressure across key industrial hubs like Gazipur, Ashulia, and Mirpur. Security forces deployed tear gas and heightened deployments to disperse protesters, following days of violent clashes that resulted in numerous arrests and injuries. Workers are pushing for a minimum monthly wage increase to 30,000 taka (approximately $243 USD), up from the current 12,500 taka, to cope with soaring inflation and severe living cost pressures. The ongoing labor friction has forced hundreds of ready-made garment (RMG) factories to halt operations temporarily, threatening production schedules for major international brands. In an effort to defuse the nationwide crisis, authorities recently formed a specialized six-member wage board to review worker demands and stabilize the critical export sector.
