For the first time, President Biden will allow Ukraine to use U.S. long-range missiles on Russia. It is likely that these weapons will first be used in the Kursk region against Russian and North Korean troops. This decision marks a major shift in U.S. policy, coming as Biden has just two months left in office. President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to limit further support for Ukraine. Biden’s decision is a response to Russia’s recruitment of North Korean troops into the war. Ukraine will now be able to use Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), which have a range of around 190 miles. U.S. officials do not expect these weapons to make a big difference in the war, but instead aim to send a warning to North Korea. There are some fears that this could spark Putin to retaliate against the U.S. and its allies.
