Colombia’s President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella has suspended the transition process to succeed President Gustavo Petro. He accused Petro of planning a coup to stay in power after the incumbent leader refused to recognize the results of the recent presidential election. Petro alleged fraud in the June 21 runoff without providing evidence, while de la Espriella also offered no evidence in support of his claim that Petro was seeking to cling to power.
Petro’s administration has likewise suspended the handover process in response to the dispute, which has further disrupted the presidential transition. De la Espriella was declared the winner of the runoff by a margin of about 251,000 votes, with international election observers praising the transparency and reliability of the vote-counting process.
