Ferrer departs Cuba for Florida after a U.S. government request.
José Daniel Ferrer left Cuba Monday morning from Santiago to Florida following a request from the U.S. government that he agreed to, Cuban authorities confirmed. The 55-year-old dissident was imprisoned in 2003 as part of a group of 75 opposition figures and later founded the Patriotic Union of Cuba after refusing to leave the island as a condition of his 2010-2011 release. He was arrested again in 2021 during mass protests, briefly freed in January as part of negotiations involving the Catholic Church, then re-imprisoned in April for allegedly violating release terms before accepting exile in early October.
