Dominican Republic says it seized cocaine that was on speedboat destroyed by US Navy

Caribbean anti-drug mission claims first joint success

In August, the U.S. sent eight warships and a submarine to the southern Caribbean in an anti-drug trafficking mission. The U.S. Navy destroyed a speedboat carrying an estimated 1,000 kilograms of cocaine about 80 nautical miles south of Dominican territory. Dominican authorities recovered 377 packages of cocaine from the destroyed vessel, which officials said was trying to use their nation as a bridge to transport drugs to the United States. Human rights groups have criticized the naval strikes as extrajudicial killings after more than a dozen people died aboard three destroyed speedboats.
