Migrant boat found adrift with heavy loss of life.

A drifting boat south of Gran Canaria was spotted with five dead on board and 44 survivors brought to the Canary Islands. The rescued men, mostly from Mali and Senegal, were dehydrated and disoriented after what they described as nearly a month at sea. Survivors said more than 100 people had originally departed Gambia, with bodies thrown overboard as passengers died. A migrant rights group later reported that 83 people had perished during the journey, including women and a baby.
