The European Union on Monday imposed sanctions on almost 1,600 Russian people and companies linked to the country’s arms industry, the largest single sanctions listing since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began nearly five years ago. The measures target mid-level suppliers in the drone and missile production chains, including providers of electronics, radar, navigation and satellite systems, explosives and ammunition. The bloc also sanctioned 77 people accused of organizing or running “sham elections” in occupied parts of Ukraine. Announcing the move, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said more than half of the listings address the production chain for the ballistic missiles Russia uses against Ukrainian civilians, adding that this is not the time to ease pressure on Moscow.
