Germany’s Merz says state election will not impact his coalition

Germany’s Chancellor has ruled out changes to his governing coalition.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reiterated that his conservative CDU will not cooperate with the far‑right Alternative for Germany (AfD) following a close state election in Baden‑Württemberg. The Greens narrowly finished ahead of the CDU, but Merz emphasized the result would not affect the coalition government’s stability in Berlin. He attributed the outcome partly to the popularity of the Greens’ lead candidate, Cem Ozdemir. Merz vowed to accelerate economic reforms despite the electoral setback.
