Guatemalan authorities have ordered the evacuation of hundreds of people, after Central America’s most active volcano spewed gas and ash thousands of metres into the sky. At least 700 residents – including those from five communities in the Chimaltenango, Escuintla and Sacatepequez areas near the volcano – were told to move to shelters, the country’s disaster agency said on Friday. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) said late on Thursday that Volcan de Fuego (Volcano of Fire) emitted hot gases and volcanic matter up to 7km (4 miles) from the site of the eruption. The volcano is located some 35km (22 miles) from the capital, Guatemala City. In a report shortly after midnight on Friday, Guatemala’s National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) said a lava flow could be seen stretching to around 1.2km. “This continues to accumulate in an unstable manner around the crater and in the high parts of the ravines, which could collapse and cause more pyroclastic flows,” it said. Authorities said they continued to monitor the situation. The government has suspended classes at 39 schools and closed a road linking the south of the country to the colonial city of Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, CONRED said.
