Haiti, Jamaica and Cuba pick up the pieces after Melissa’s destruction

Caribbean reels from Hurricane Melissa’s widespread destruction.

Hurricane Melissa tore through Jamaica, Haiti, and Cuba, leaving collapsed homes, flooded towns, and thousands displaced. Jamaica’s southwest coast saw near-total roof loss, with over 25,000 people in shelters and 77% of the island without power. Haiti reported at least 25 deaths, including 10 children in Petit-Goâve, and thousands remain sheltered. Cuba avoided fatalities after mass evacuations, but towns like El Cobre suffered severe damage, including to its historic basilica.
