North Korea used its appearance at the United Nations to argue that a more multipolar world is emerging while stressing that it can achieve its goals through its own efforts if necessary. Vice Foreign Minister Kim Son Gyong defended the country’s military and nuclear deterrent, criticized the United Nations and the security cooperation among South Korea, Japan, and the United States, and accused Japan of past wrongdoing. Despite the familiar rhetoric, the speech avoided direct threats and was milder than many previous North Korean addresses. The remarks came days after North Korea launched ballistic missiles and renewed its emphasis on strengthening its nuclear capabilities.
