India’s government failed to secure passage of a constitutional amendment that would expand the size of parliament, a move tied to implementing long-promised women’s representation quotas. Opposition parties accused the ruling coalition of rushing the bill without adequate consultation and warned it could shift political power toward certain states. Supporters argued the expansion was necessary to reflect population growth and enable the women’s quota to take effect.
