India warns Pakistan of potential cross-border flooding
India alerted Pakistan about possible flooding from heavy monsoon rains through diplomatic channels, marking the first official contact between the nuclear rivals in months. The warning came on “humanitarian grounds” rather than through the usual Indus Waters Commission, as India suspended the 1960 water treaty following the April attacks that killed 26 tourists in Kashmir. Monsoon floods have already killed nearly 800 people in Pakistan since late June, while dozens have died in Indian-administered Kashmir. The communication represents a diplomatic thaw after both countries exchanged missile strikes in May.
