On Tuesday, the Israeli military said that it struck sites in southern Syria. The strikes came just hours after the new Syrian leadership had demanded for Israel’s withdrawal from Syrian territory that it had seized after the fall of the Assad regime. The Israeli military said that the attacks were targeted at headquarters and sites containing weapons. The strikes are part of Israel’s new policy focused on protecting what Israel sees as its “security zone” in the region. On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanded the “complete demilitarization” of southern Syria in a speech. Syria’s new government has condemned the speech and Israel’s actions.
