Israel’s top general has resigned over the security and intelligence failures on the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi oversaw Israel’s response to the deadly attack in which at least 1,139 people were killed. He is the most senior Israeli official to resign over the assault. In Halevi’s resignation letter, he wrote that, ““My responsibility for the terrible failure accompanies me every day, hour by hour, and will do so for the rest of my life.” The head of Israel’s Southern Command, Major General Yaron Finkelman, tendered his resignation shortly afterwards.
