The International Court of Justice has begun proceedings in a case concerning the impacts of climate change. The case began after a request by the UN General Assembly for the Court’s opinion on member states’ obligations to combat climate change. The case is of particular importance to smaller island nations that are currently experiencing impacts from sea level rise. As this is an advisory opinion it would not compel UN member states to take action, but it could lead to domestic legal action.
