Lebanese Lawmakers Choose a President After 2 Years of Gridlock 

After over two years of gridlock, Lebanese lawmakers chose a new president on Thursday. This is an important step in stabilizing the country which is currently suffering from war and an economic catastrophe. Lawmakers elected General Joseph Aoun, who is the commander of the Lebanese military. He was chosen by an overwhelming majority in the second round of voting, which is seen as a crucial milestone for Lebanon. International backers for Lebanon, including the U.S., have implied that financial support following the war is contingent on the election of a president.
